Ceremony to rename Kendall street after late rabbi
Miami Herald Staff Report
Miami--Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson and state Rep. Julio Robaina will hold a ceremony naming a part of Southwest 87th Avenue after the late Rabbi Barry Tabachnikoff at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The ceremony will be at Congregation Bet Breira, 9400 SW 87th Ave., which Tabachnikoff helped found.
The Florida Legislature approved the street naming for State Road Southwest 87th Avenue between Southwest 94th and 95th streets to commemorate Rabbi Tabachnikoff's contributions to his temple, the Jewish community and the South Florida community at large. The rabbi passed away in 2003.
''Rabbi Tabachnikoff was the mainstay of Bet Breira, a reform Congregation, which has been a place of worship for several generations of families,'' Sorenson said. ``Through this co-designation, his spirit will remain close to the temple he founded.''
Tabachnikoff was the founding rabbi of Congregation Bet Breira, meaning ''House of Choice,'' in 1975. He also was the driving force in the creation of the Bet Breira Day School.
He was active in several national and international religious organizations, including the National Rabbinic Cabinet of Israel Bonds and the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
For 15 years, Tabachnikoff chaired The Jewish Worship Hour, which aired on Channel 10 under the patronage of the Rabbinic Association.
As vice president of the American Jewish Committee, he was responsible for interfaith activities and hosted many interfaith TV forums and dialogue groups with Catholic, Methodist and Episcopal churches in the Miami area.
Tabachnikoff also was a chaplain at the VA Hospital in Miami and was a member of the Bioethics Committee of Miami Children's Hospital.
In 1990, he was invited to give the invocation at the opening session of U.S. Congress in recognition of his leadership role in the Jewish community and involvement in interfaith affairs.
