The victorious Florida City Razorbacks junior football team filled Florida City's Town Hall with its friends and family during Tuesday's commission meeting.
Florida City Commissioner Eugene Berry congratulated the middle school players for winning their last game at the Sean Taylor Classic and encouraged them to do well in the upcoming semifinals in Orlando.
''With prayer, I feel we can make it to the finals,'' Berry said. ``The season is not over yet. We still got business to finish.''
Coach Bo Sumner, superintendent of Florida City's Parks Department, presented to the commission the last two trophies the Razorbacks had won. He said the team would play in this year's national tournament for the fourth time.
''The team they beat last week was No. 1 in the country,'' Mayor Otis T. Wallace said. ``I guess you're No. 1 now.''
Wallace and Berry also thanked all the volunteers who coach and take care of the football team.
''That's what it's all about -- keeping the kids in a good, healthy program, teaching them discipline, respect and quality of life,'' Berry said.
''It's a labor of love,'' Wallace said. ``We really appreciate it.''
The City Commission approved using leftover grant money to build two new shelters in Loren Roberts Park. The shelters will cost about $17,000 and the remaining $3,000 will be spent on landscaping.
A day-care center was also approved Tuesday. It will be located at the southwest corner of Lucy Street and Northwest Ninth Avenue.
