Understanding used-car warranties

The Dade County Bar Association's LegalLine answers legal and consumer questions for free on the first Wednesday of the month from 6 to 9 p.m. Call 866-596-0399. In the case below, it explains what to do if you buy from a used car lot, a car with a three-month warranty but the dealer won't honor it when it immediately breaks down:

The dealer has committed a deceptive act and you can seek legal recourse. Under Florida's Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, a dealer that provides an express or implied warranty and fails to honor it has committed an ''actionable, unfair, or deceptive act.'' This means you may have a legal remedy.

If a used car dealership refuses to honor its warranty, contact Florida's Division of Consumer Services, 800helpfla.com or 800-435-7352, or seek legal counsel.
